We are very lucky to got life.
We are very lucky that we are intelligent enough to ask the question : Why we exist?
First of all, what is the meaning of being alive?
Being alive means to grow, to reproduce, to respond to stimuli, either or all of them makes anything alive, or we identify that something is alive with these factors.
Achieving these thing will not be easy if you are just one or two molecules wide, as the initial life was . To grow you have to attract new molecules. To reproduce, you have to copy structures of molecules in to another bunch of molecules called the cells, this is achieved by means of DNA. To respond to stimuli you have to achieve a state that is called consciousness.
The process by which it was achieved by the creatures like us is called "Evolution".
All this happened but in a very long time comparative to the lifetime of human, it took enormous amount of courage, endurance, will power and sacrifices to make us, the homo sapience.
And today we can feel the meaning of these words. But the creatures who done this did not know the meaning of these words but they lived these words.
What science says about the existence of life?
Actually science is not aware of at least 97% living species on earth. The earth is full of life which is not visible to humans. Take a pinch of the dust from your desk, it will contain billions of bacteria of a million type, and among them at least 50% will be new to scientific world. And for your surprise take another pinch of the dust from another desk nearby and it will contain a million another type of bacterias.
We think that we are alive because there are life supporting conditions on earth. Plenty of water, water cycle to make water available to distant parts, tectonic plate system to balance the corrosion, hard surface to stand on, an atmosphere to breath, an ozone layer to protect organism from deadly ultraviolet radiation.
But think,
is breathing, drinking, standing or floating, not contacting the ultraviolet are the only properties of life that a some heap of molecules who are growing , reproducing and responding, must follow?
Scientist have found the bacteria that can lives in the boiling water. There are bacteria that can bear extreme temperature of 200 C and extreme cold of -273 C (Which is the lowest possible temperature.). These are limits on which molecules and atoms give up. In the caves of Australia some bacteria live in concentrated sulfuric acid.
They all take advantage of chemical reactions. So.
There must be some methods, other than to burn oxygen, to provide energy to the part of the body of any Alien. Yes.
Well then there are infinite possibilities and forms of life. We can imagine anything awkward.
But the creature must follow the law of thermodynamics. That means it must be able to produce energy by increasing the entropy of the things it consumes.
We consume food that has good entropy and discharge something that has a low entropy. Because without energy consumption there will be no life. Example : Imagine a planet where atmosphere is full of hydrogen and nitrogen only. Don't think about any combustion that can take place in this kind of environment. Now our seriously hilarious alien can use the energy produced from the following equation.:
