I call supernovas explosion of life, as we are part of that only. Supernova are the explosions which takes place when a star dies. This happens when a star runs out of fuel. A dead star can ultimately be a supernova or it can become a black hole. Its fate is decided by many factors, like composition, volume, mass of the star. Main factor is mass.
There was a scientist named Chandrasekhar who studied deeply on the electron degenerate matter of the stars and gave a constant called Chandrasekhar Limit.
If a star is more massive than eight solar mass than it will lose its mass in supernova explosion and more likely be a neutron star or ultimately a black hole, and if it is less massive than eight solar mass then it will become a white dwarf, and can explode by getting some mass from its companion star, that is what we call type La supernova explosion.
Chandrasekhar discovered that white dwarf cannot exceed the limit of 1.4 solar mass. So for a white draft to explode some mass is required from any other source.
Why Supernovae are so Important Phenomena?
Because supernovae are responsible for creating the heavier elements which creates planets and planetary system like ours. Often they create new stars. We and all things around us are made of the supernova remnants, all were part of the star at any time.
Millions of tons of gold , platinum , lead and other elements is thrown in to the space when a supernova explosion occurs. A supernova explosion can shine whole galaxy for several weeks. If a supernova explosion happens in our galaxy we will witness daylight for several weeks.
